Ashikaga Meisen

2019/08/28

This is an introduction to Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture, located in the northern part of Tokyo, and Ashikaga Meisen.

Meisen kimonos are thick and durable silk fabrics, and existed in the 1700s as everyday and informal ceremonial wear of the samurai. The Meisen kimono pattern was generally striped until the late 1800s.When entering the 1900s, a technique called hogushigasuri became utilized.

Hogushigasuri is a technique in which the warp and woof are deliberately shifted to blur the color boundaries and create a soft pattern. In the 1920s, Western designs were adopted into hogushigasuri and colorful and bold patterns were introduced, which led to an explosion in popularity among women of the time.
