Tenugui

2019/10/26

Tenugui is Japanese towel, and the record of its use from A.D. 700 is found in old literature.

Once, it used to be used for washing the body in bathing, wiping a table and tableware after a meal, covering the head so that hair might not become dirty at the time of cleaning, wiping sweat in hot summer, wrapping around the neck in cold winter, and also instead of the bandage at the time of an injury, and used as a wiping cloth if it became shabby.

Almost all Japanese are said to have carried it around habitually.

Although some of the present tenugui are dyed in the classic pattern to keep tradition, its patterns are rich in variety: colorful and cute patterns young designers designed, seasonal flowers, and fruits.

Tenuigui is the textile of 100% cotton and thin, and the ends of its cloth are rough-hewn. Because, that makes itself convenient to carry around, quick to dry, and  hygienic. If the ends of tenugui become frayed, please cut them with scissors or make a fringe.

Tenugui has various purposes: a hand towel, a dishcloth, a place mat, a scarf, a headband, decorating a wall like a tapestry, wrapping a gift, and so on. If you have other good ideas, please let me know.
